Omaruru – Namibia’s Town of Artists

Omaruru is often called Namibia’s town of artists. The little town is located along the Omaruru River and the Otjimakuru. Its name comes from the Otjiherero words omaere omaruro, meaning “bitter curd”, referring to the grey stink bush found in the riverbed of the Omaruru River. (Source: Wikipedia)

Omaruru may be small, but you’ll find pretty much everything you need here – from shops and cafés to art galleries, craft stores and little souvenir shops.

For a real glimpse into the past, visit the Living Museum of the Ju/’Hoansi-San. Here, you can learn more about the ancient hunter-gatherer culture and traditional way of life of the San people.

And if you’re up for a day trip, Spitzkoppe is definitely worth the drive. Around 130 km away, the spectacular “Matterhorn of Namibia” is one of the country’s most photographed landmarks. With its dramatic rock formations and ancient rock paintings, it’s a place you won’t forget anytime soon.
